STA 257F Test/Exam Information and Guide

The course STA257 will have two midterm tests and a final exam. Here is some information about what to expect.

Preparation:

All tests will be closed book (no aid sheet), and will cover all material in lecture up to that point (though Midterm #2 will emphasise material since Midterm #1). Yes including proofs. So, study the material well, to be well prepared!

Your main studying sources should be the course notes, the suggested homework problems, and the corresponding textbook sections. You could also consult other textbooks [e.g. this book or this] or online web pages and instructional videos for additional material.

Location:

The tests/exams will usually NOT be in the regular classroom. Make sure you know where and when the test will be held, and show up at the right place at the right time! If necessary, consult the campus map.

Be sure to take the test of the section that you are enrolled in (otherwise 20% penalty!).

Be sure to bring your writing/erasing instruments, your T-card, and perhaps one approved basic calculator.

When you arrive:

Please wait in the hallway until you are called into the room (probably a few minutes before the test start time).

Once you enter the room, you may sit at any empty spot with an exam paper in front of it. Except, do not sit next to anyone that you know.

You may keep on your desk: your writing/erasing instruments, your T-card, one approved basic calculator, and perhaps a drink/snack/tissue/etc.

All other items, including your books, notes, phone, knapsack, pencil case, purse, etc, must all be put away -- either on the floor by your seat, or at the front of the room.

Once your items are put away, then you may fill in the cover page of the exam booklet (which will look something like this Booklet #122 cover), with your first and last name, and your student number. You should also read and sign the Academic Integrity statement at the bottom of the cover page.

However, do NOT open the exam booklet until you are told to do so.

During the test/exam:

Try to solve all of the questions, as best as you can.

Write with pen or sharp pencil in the space provided.

If necessary, you may continue your answer in the extra last page. If so, then write "SEE LAST PAGE" on your solution, and also write the QUESTION NUMBER on the last page.

You are required to follow the university's Code of Behaviour at all times, which will be strictly enforced. You may not communicate with anyone else about the test material. Thank you for not cheating!

Be sure to explain your answers clearly, to show that you understand what you are doing; this will help even if your final answer is incorrect. When in doubt, it is always better to explain a little bit more, not less.

You may use results from class, with explanation.

If you obtain numerical answers, then it is fine to leave them as fractions, or as decimals (include at least a few decimals to make it clear that you know the correct answer, but the exact number of decimals is flexible). You can also leave them as numerical expressions like "(1/3) - (3/11)" or "e^{17}". For expressions like "9 choose 4", you should expand it to factorials like "9! / 5! 4!", but you do not need to evaluate the factorial values.

You will be provided with scrap paper. If you need additional scrap paper, simply raise your hand and request it.

If you do are missing an essential item (pen, pencil, eraser, sharpener, calculator, etc), then there are no guarantees but I might have a few extras, so you can raise your hand and ask.

If you finish the test early, then you may hand in your paper early and leave the room (after at least 30 minutes). However, make sure you check your work carefully first!

In the last few minutes of the test, you will be asked to stay in your seats and not leave early.

Once the test is over, please stop writing immediately. Then, close your exam booklet, and wait quietly while your booklet and scrap paper are collected. Please do not move or talk until all the booklets have been collected -- thank you.

After the test/exam:

Once the test is over, relax! We will get the test graded as quickly as we can, but it still might take a while, so it might be a week or two until you learn your grade. And meanwhile, there is nothing more you can do.

For security, please do not speak or post anything publicly about the test until 24 hours after it is written (in case other students are writing it later in accommdation, etc). But it is okay to chat right afterwards with friends who took the test when you did.

In some cases, we might post solutions for you to inspect.

Once the exam is graded, it will be returned to you (probably via Crowdmark), plus the grades might be posted on Quercus.

Regrades:

Regrading requests should be made within four days of when the graded item was first available, but only for (rare) genuine grading errors, not for grading judgements, otherwise your mark may end up going down rather than up.

For details, please carefully read the regrading policy and instructions before considering making any regrade request.

For the final exam, a different Faculty-wide process should be followed instead, but the same principles still apply.

Missed tests:

Any student who cannot attend a midterm due to illness should submit an ACORN Absence Declaration (or for multiple absences a Verification of Illness form), and email a copy of it to sta257@course.utoronto.ca.

If excused, the corresponding weight will be shifted to the Final Exam.

If a student cannot attend the Final Exam, they should instead submit a petition for a deferred exam.
