• Here are my notes about the death certificate:
  • The year of death matches the year in Gladys Kaminsky's family tree.
  • This must be for the right David Weiss, as the address is 456 E. 10th St. (This is the address of David Weiss and family in the 1900 and 1905 censuses, and this is his son Edward's address in the 1906 documents admitting Edward to an orphanage.)
  • The "Character of premises" is "Tenement".
  • David's occupation is Tailor.
  • It shows he died August 18, 1907, with the cause of death being "Heart failure - [oedema?] of lungs following myocarditis".
  • It shows his place of birth and that of his parents as Austria. [From 1867 to 1918, Hungary was part of the "Austro-Hungarian Empire."]
  • It indicates he has lived in the U.S., and in New York, for 34 years (at least, it appears to say "34"). (That would make his year of immigration ~1873, which is considerably earlier than the ~1881 found in other documents.)
  • Father's Name: Sam Weiss [this is new information and is different from the father's name provided on David's 1885 marriage certificate, which said "Jacob Weis"].
  • Mother's Name: Dora Gross [this is new information and is different from the mother's name provided on David's 1885 marriage certificate, which said "Betti Fein"].
  • Place of Burial: Washington ___?

  • "64th year of life" on this gravestone matches David Weiss's age according to his death certificate (age 63).
  • The number of children mentioned on this gravestone matches the number of surviving children David Weiss had as of 1907, eight: four from his first marriage -- Julia, Regina, Bertha, and Jacob -- and four from his second -- William, Esther, Sally, and Edward. (His oldest child, Rose, had already died, probably in 1905.)
  • According to "Reading Hebrew Tombstones", the letters at the top of this gravestone are an abbreviation which stands for "po nikbar or po nitman, meaning here lies," and the last line contains an "abbreviation of a verse from the Bible, the first book of Samuel, 25:29, 'May his soul be bound up in the bond of eternal life'."
  • "Reading Hebrew Tombstones" explains that a Hebrew name includes one's father's given name, and it shows the letters for "son of", which I can see are the second group from the right, on the third line of Hebrew. Just to the right of that, it looks like the letters dalet, vav, dalet (similar to "d", "v", "d"), which makes sense if this says "David".
  • Reading this line from the right, it likely says "David son of Mr."? And then the next word (judging by the website "HebrewNames") is probably Yacov (which makes sense since what appears to be David Weiss's marriage certificate, from his second marriage, lists his father's name as Jacob Weiss). Then there's another word after that on the same line.
