NAOMI BROCK (PROBABLY WITH COUSIN) - IMMIGRATION - DEC. 26, 1906
These documents show the immigration in 1906 of Naomi Brock (later Naomi Rosenthal), 1891-1977.
Document 1 is a page from her ship's manifest, and document 2 shows she was briefly detained at Ellis Island.

NOTES:
- Here's a copy of the (modern) transcription on the Ellis Island website:
First Name: Nannie
Last Name: Brock
Ethnicity: Russia, Hebrew
Last Place of Residence: Warschaw, Russia
Date of Arrival: Dec 26, 1906
Age at Arrival: 18y
Gender: F
Marital Status: S
Ship of Travel: Kroonland
Port of Departure: Antwerp
Manifest Line Number: 0016
- Although the transcriber guessed "Nannie" for the first name, it may actually say "Naume"? And another transcription I found for the same document said "Narime."
- Although Naomi's age is listed as 18, probably she was actually only 15! since other documents record her date of birth as August 19, 1891.
- For "Calling or Occupation", I think it says "St" (for "Student"?).
- For "Able to Read" and "Able to Write", it seems to say "no."
- It looks like Naomi was travelling with her cousin; for the column "Whether Going to Join a Relative or Friend", here's what it says for Naomi:
brother in law Ch Rothschild
New York 223 Madison St.
and here's what it says for the person in the row below:
cousin N. Brock
New York 223 Madison St.
See this address today (on the Lower East side of Manhattan) in Google Maps.
- In several columns, the symbol:
"
is used to indicate repetition of the information in the row(s) just above.
- In column 8 (Nationality), " indicates a repeat of Russia from a couple of rows above.
- In column 9 (Race or People), " indicates a repeat of Hebrew from a couple of rows above.
- New note added Sept. 2015: In the final column (Place of Birth), the symbol " seems to indicate that Naomi's is the same as the two people listed just above her (which might say "Prluski," according to one transcription I found). If this is true, might she have been travelling with those two people? (a 20-year-old woman and her 18-year-old brother, on their way to join a relative in Cleveland), in addition to the person listed below her who appears to be her cousin? Meanwhile her cousin's place of birth is listed as Warsaw. Might Naomi's family perhaps have moved from another town to Warsaw after her birth? Or perhaps the " written here is just an error by the steamship clerk and should have said Warsaw?
- New note added Sept. 2015: The x next to Naomi's name means that, like many immigrants, she was temporarily detained rather than immediately being admitted to the U.S. and permitted to leave Ellis Island. Apparently unaccompanied women were quite often detained until a male relative came to get them. A separate section at the end of the ship's manifest lists the "detained aliens":
- The typewritten list of detainees (DOCUMENT 2, above) lists Naomi in row 18, as "Nannie".
- In the "Cause of detention" column it says "to sis" (this means they were waiting for her sister to come and get her).
- The "Disposition" column shows the name and address of the person to whom the detained immigrant in question was released. It appears to say "b-i-l Hyman Rothschild 223 Madison NYC." "b-i-l" stands for "brother in law." So presumably Naomi's sister had married Hyman Rothschild? (listed earlier in the ship's manifest as Ch Rothschild -- perhaps his anglicized name was Charles?). I have not been able to find any further information about this brother-in-law. I found the census form for 223 Madison in the 1905 (the year prior to Naomi's arrival), but it does not include anyone named Rothschild. (In case you are curious: 1905 census, pages 44-45 and pages 48-49
- It says Naomi was discharged on Dec. 26 (the same day she arrived) at 1:00 by Inspector Behl; and under "Meals" it shows that during her detention, Naomi ate 1 dinner (which we would now call lunch) and no breakfast or supper. So her detention was very brief.
- Here is the (modern) transcription provided for the person listed below Naomi, who appears to be her cousin:
First Name: Getzel
Last Name: Lasko
Ethnicity: Russia, Hebrew
Last Place of Residence: Warschaw, Russia
Date of Arrival: Dec 26, 1906

Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Kroonland
Port of Departure: Antwerp

- Here is some info from the Ellis Island website about the Kroonland, along with a photo:
