Lectures -- Mondays 2:10-3:00, and Tuesdays 1:10-3:00.
First class Sept 8. Last class Dec 7.
No class Oct 12 (Thanksgiving) nor Oct 26 nor 27 (Reading Week).
Lectures will be interactive; please
stop talking
and put away your phone/laptop (except when being used for the class)
and pay close attention to the material being presented,
and raise your hand to ask and respond to questions.
You may also be called upon to answer questions,
or asked to move forward in the classroom.
Evaluation:
• 28% Midterm #1: Tues Oct 13, during class time;
100 minutes.
• 28% Midterm #2: Tues Nov 17, during class time;
100 minutes.
• 44% Final Exam: some time
during Dec 10-22 final exam period, to be announced; three hours.
• You can also earn
up to three bonus points, at the instructor's sole discretion,
for paying good consistent attention in class
and actively answering questions and interacting with the instructor.
Textbooks: The course will follow various bits and pieces of the following three books, which will all be available at UofT Bookstore and Amazon etc, and also on short-term loan at UofT Libraries; you do not need to purchase these books, but you may wish to consult them from time to time during the course:
Homework: There will be no formal homework assignments to hand in. However, students are strongly encouraged to try the questions in the various textbooks to learn the material well.
Instructor Office Hours: Tuesday lectures will end a bit early, and the instructor will stay for questions. You can also email him to ask questions or arrange to meet. He will also have office hours in his office [Ontario Power Building, 700 University Avenue, 9th Floor, room 9070; SW Corner of College St and University Ave] before the midterms and final exam.
Discussion Page: There is a STA357 "Piazza" discussion page where students can post and answer questions about the course. You should be able to access it from the course's quercus page; let me know of any difficulties. (Be sure to keep posts respectful and polite, and note they are NOT anonymous.)
